Upwaltham Barns is a charming wedding venue in the heart of the South Downs. Surrounded by rolling hills and countryside views, it has a relaxed atmosphere that suits couples who want an easy, enjoyable day with plenty of space for their guests to wander and unwind. I photographed a wedding here as a second shooter which gave me a great insight into how the day flows and how the barns work from a photography point of view.

A peaceful countryside setting

The venue is made up of flint barns, pretty courtyards and landscaped gardens. It feels tucked away and private, with a soft, natural light that works beautifully throughout the day. The setting is ideal for couples who want a simple, elegant backdrop without anything too formal or dramatic. The outdoor spaces are especially lovely in spring and summer.

The ceremony barn

Ceremonies at Upwaltham Barns usually take place in Jasmine Cottage or the East Barn. The ceremony space has stone walls, wooden beams and gentle light coming through the windows. It creates a warm and intimate atmosphere which photographs very well. My approach is documentary led, capturing the natural emotion and the connection between you and your guests without interrupting the moment.

The courtyard and gardens

After the ceremony, guests often move into the central courtyard for drinks. This is one of the prettiest parts of the venue. There is space for people to mingle, relax and enjoy the sunshine. It is a great place for candid photography because everyone settles quickly and the natural backdrop adds interest without feeling staged. Family photos can also be done here with minimal disruption.

The reception barn

The South Barn is used for the wedding breakfast and evening celebrations. It is spacious and welcoming with high beams, soft lighting and a neutral colour palette that suits many styles of decor. The barn works well for speeches, with plenty of room to move quietly and record reactions from different angles. In the evening the atmosphere becomes lively with dancing and warm light from the rafters.

Portraits at Upwaltham Barns

The venue offers several options for portraits. The gardens have gentle natural light and simple backgrounds which help keep the focus on the two of you. There are also quiet corners around the grounds that are perfect for a short portrait session without taking you far from your guests. I keep portraits easy and natural, guiding you into flattering light without anything forced.

My approach at Upwaltham Barns

As an Upwaltham barns wedding photographer, the relaxed setting suits my natural, unobtrusive photography style. I focus on real moments, elegant composition and true to life colour so your gallery feels timeless and personal. The venue offers plenty of opportunities for candid storytelling which is always at the centre of my work.
