If you’ve booked Dartmouth House for your wedding reception and you’re now searching for a photographer who actually knows the venue, you’re in the right place. I’ve had the pleasure of photographing a wedding at Dartmouth House, and it’s one of those rare London venues that makes a photographer’s job genuinely exciting.

Here’s everything you need to know about how the day can look and feel through a camera lens.

About Dartmouth House

Dartmouth House is a Grade II listed Georgian mansion on Charles Street in the heart of Mayfair, just off Berkeley Square. Originally constructed in the 16th century and converted into its current form in the late 19th century, it’s one of London’s most beautiful private event spaces - grand without being cold, formal without being stuffy.

The venue is made up of several distinct spaces: the Churchill Room, the Long Drawing

Room, the Small Drawing Room, and the jewel in the crown - a private courtyard that feels entirely unlike anything else you’ll find in central London.

How the Day Flows (From a Photographer’s Perspective)

The wedding I photographed at Dartmouth House followed a classic London format: a civil ceremony at Marylebone Town Hall, followed by the reception at Dartmouth House. It’s a combination that works beautifully, and one I’d wholeheartedly recommend.

Marylebone Town Hall is one of London’s most elegant register offices - its Council

Chamber provides a surprisingly intimate and architecturally striking ceremony space, and the grand exterior gives you a natural spot for confetti and group photos before guests make their way across to Mayfair.

By the time everyone arrives at Dartmouth House, the atmosphere shifts into something warmer and more celebratory - which is exactly the energy you want heading into a reception.

Drinks and Canapés in the Courtyard

The courtyard at Dartmouth House is genuinely special. It’s a secluded outdoor space in the middle of Mayfair, peaceful, private, and architecturally beautiful, with a French chateau influence that photographs incredibly well.

For drinks and canapés, it creates a natural gathering space where guests can relax and

mingle after the formality of the ceremony. As a photographer, I love this part of the day: the light in the courtyard is soft and flattering, guests are relaxed and laughing, and the details, glasses of champagne, florals against the stone, candid moments between friends - all come together beautifully.

If the weather is on your side, the courtyard is one of the strongest arguments for choosing Dartmouth House.

The Grand Staircase: Portrait Heaven

One of the highlights of Dartmouth House for wedding photography is the sweeping Belgian marble staircase. It’s a genuinely iconic architectural feature - the kind of staircase that commands attention and photographs effortlessly.

I used it for couple portraits, and it delivers. The scale of it gives you a sense of grandeur without requiring any elaborate setup, and the warm tones of the marble complement almost any colour palette. Whether you’re going for something editorial and architectural or soft and romantic, the staircase works for both.

If you’re getting married at Dartmouth House, make sure your photographer knows to use it- it would be a shame to leave without portraits on those stairs.
